Rumbly in My Tumbly

This is a photo of a peice that I made for my 3D art class last semester. Keep in mind this is the very first art class I have ever taken in my life! I spent more money, time, and effort into this class than all my other ones and still ended up with a B+. Needless to say it was very stressful! This particular piece stirred up a bit of controversy, because people couldn’t really seem to grasp where I was going with this.

The assignment was to take an object and make it absract. I picked coffee. So instead of just making it completely unrecognizable and saying my inspiration was coffee I decided to put a little more meaning into it. The “coffee” spilling out is actually Bible pages. Once everyone got over the shock that I was tearing pages out of a Bible, this raised a lot of questions in the classroom. People would ask, “What does coffee have to do with the Bible?”, “Are you trying to say that coffee is a religious experience?”, “Is this a symbol of someone giving up on God and throwing it all away?”. I had to answer that I honestly really didn’t read that deep into my own piece. I am a Christian and I like coffee so I thought it would be cool to combine the two into this project. That’s all. I guess I don’t think like most artist, but my vision was simple.

I guess if I had to explain it I would describe the green peice (which is an absratction of the Starbucks logo) as an angel-type figure who is joyfully pouring the word of God for all to enjoy. But it’s art so I know it’ll mean different things to different people.
